I was present at a lecture by Churches for Life president Doug Merkey here in St. Louis today. The thrust of his presentation was that pro-life christians should be "gospel-driven" champions of life. Why? Because we were unable to save ourselves from our sinful predicament and God himself rescued us through his Son. His Son gave his life to accomplish this. Now because our hearts are filled with joy, gratitude, relief, love and all of those things we have experienced including wanting to be like our Savior, we are driven to become rescuers ourselves. We are rescued rescuers.
The weakest among us who cannot speak or advocate or represent themselves need someone to do it for them. The child in the womb who is in danger of being terminated has been in most cases abandoned by his father and rejected by his mother. That child is, in effect, an orphan. We must be that child's rescurers. The woman who has been abandoned by the father of the child she carries is, in effect, a widow. We must be that woman's rescuers. We must because we were in danger of eternal death and unable to advocate for ourselves and the Creator of the universe loved us and reached down and saved us. We must remember that and act in the same way toward those in need. Deuteronomy 24:17-22.
