Feb 11

I signed up one person for the Run/Walk and spoke to two other people who committed to sign up. This date marks 21 days or 3 weeks of this exercise in doing one thing for the pro-life arena every day.

I worked on the lyrics of a pro-life song I've had in mind for some time.  I'm trying to keep it contemporary while using well known scripture to build the lyrics.  I have some friends at church that have the talent to compose the music if I can come up with acceptable lyrics.

I worked on a pro-life book for children that I've been working on sporadically for a couple of years.  I've got most of the language worked out.  I need to get the text into its proper order. I also need to compose a description of the illustrations.  This may be just a pipe dream but I'm going to pursue it anyway.  This do one thing exercise may be the catalyst for doing a lot of things I've been thinking about.

Feb 7

On Feb 7 I worked on a letter to Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan.  She has announced that she is going to run for U.S. Senate to replace Kit Bond in 2 years.  Her life issues positions are far out of the mainstream for Missouri.  She has also exhibited a Machiavellian "ends justify the means" approach to the drafting of ballot language for life issues amendments to the Missouri Constitution. I, of course oppose her in her election ambitions.

Feb 6

On Feb 6 I was traveling out of town so I worked on an essay exploring the apathy that seems to be prevalent in the church with respect to pro-life issues.  I think education and heart issues are on the list of causes.  I hope to have something to post in the next week or so.

Feb 4

On Wednesday, I prepared data to send to the chairman of the Life Team at church and another life team member to help in the discussion of our participation in the Walk/Run for Life.  I also passed on information for the church mission director to use in providing info on the R/W to folks attending the missions luncheon on Sunday this weekend.

On Tuesday Feb 3

Yesterday I attended the Family Division meeting at church and presented the Life Team vision for a church wide participation in the Thrive Walk/Run for life.  The idea was well received and encouraged.   Today I'll be preparing a paper for the life team detailing strategy for the next couple of months.

Another Signup

Today I signed up an additional person for the Thrive Walk&Run for Life.  I also worked on my presentation to the Family division at my church with respect to our church participation in the Thrive event on May 30th.

One thing

It was pretty quiet today with church and Super Bowl sunday.  I caught and released a squirrel which has nothing to do with life except that I didn't shoot the pest.
I went to the youth group super bowl party and got a commitment from one person to sign up for the Thrive run/walk. I'll contact that person tomorrow.   I also donated $25 to the Thrive Run/Walk fund raiser.

Gospel Driven Champions of Life

I was present at a lecture by Churches for Life president Doug Merkey here in St. Louis today.  The thrust of his presentation was that pro-life christians should be "gospel-driven" champions of life.  Why?  Because we were unable to save ourselves from our sinful predicament and God himself rescued us through his Son.  His Son gave his life to accomplish this.  Now because our hearts are filled with joy, gratitude, relief, love and all of those things we have experienced including wanting to be like our Savior, we are driven to become rescuers ourselves.  We are rescued rescuers.

The weakest among us who cannot speak or advocate or represent themselves need someone to do it for them.  The child in the womb who is in danger of being terminated has been in most cases abandoned by his father and rejected by his mother.  That child is, in effect, an orphan.  We must be that child's rescurers.  The woman who has been abandoned by the father of the child she carries is, in effect, a widow.  We must be that woman's rescuers.  We must because we were in danger of eternal death and unable to advocate for ourselves and the Creator of the universe loved us and reached down and saved us.  We must remember that and act in the same way toward those in need.  Deuteronomy 24:17-22.

Day 9

I signed 3 people up for the Thrive Run and Walk for Life today.  I also had a long phone conversation with the president of Churches for Life here in St. Louis.  His organization facilitates the formation of "life teams" at various churches and nurtures their growth.  His website is at:
      http://cflstl.org/

I joined the pro-life group at a network called "The Patriotic Resistance" and posted my FOCA letter to Carnahan as my first blog entry.

Slow day 8

I spoke with three people today who have agreed to sign up for the Thrive St. Louis Run and Walk for Life on May 30th.  I will phone them tomorrow and talk them through the signup on the internet.  I also left messages with three people on the same subject.  Other than that it was a pretty slow day 8.

Walk the Corner

Several years ago, on the date of an election year primary, I was disturbed to see a bunch of young college women jumping up and down with their signs and cheering for abortion on a heavily traveled street corner near my home.  I couldn't let that stand without a response, so during the two weeks prior to the next election day, I started walking that corner with my home made pro-life sign.  On election day, I showed up extra early and staked out my position.  When the students showed up, I had already been there for some time.  The contrast in the messages was interesting.  My sign said "Abortion Stops a Beating Heart', while theirs said, among other things, "Keep Abortion Safe and Legal".  The "legal" part I understand.  The "safe" part is a direct contradiction when both objects of the abortion are considered.

Today I decided to spend a half hour on the corner with my sign.  I would estimate that 250 to 300 vehicles passed by.  I like to keep track of the overt reactions I receive from passersby.  I received 12 positive responses and 3 negative responses.  The 12 positive included 3 thumbs up, and 9 waves including several horn honks.  The negative responses included 2 fingers, one of the middle variety and one pointer wagged at me as if to say "no, no, no".  The other negative response was a guy who rolled down his window and yelled something I couldn't hear.  I responded to all of the messages with a wave and a smile.  I like the overt reactions whether positive or negative.  It tells me that those who respond are at least somewhat passionate about what they believe.  It's easier to change the hearts of passionate people than the hearts of those who are apathetic.

So that makes 7 days of this experiment to do one thing every day for the pro-life cause for one year.  Only 358 days to go and 51 weeks to go.
